While it can be simple to track changes to any moles you can see easily, mole mapping can be particularly useful for people who have a large number of moles, or have moles in a difficult to see place on the body, have a family history of skin cancer or have an increased risk.
Moles are coloured spots on the skin that look like small dark marks a bit like freckles but differ in that they are more likely to be raised from the surface of the skin.
Moles are perfectly normal, and most people have them somewhere on their body as they usually appear during childhood or early teens.
They develop when the cells producing pigment grow together in a cluster, and vary widely in shape, size and colour. Freckles, having a normal number of melanocytes (pigment producing cells) are flat and cannot turn into moles.
Mole mapping is a way to have your moles screened so that any changes can be assessed by a specialist dermatologist, providing you with a report quickly and efficiently. It is a non-invasive and safe way to digitally photograph and document moles so that any changes can be highlighted and assessed, and further treatment sought if necessary.
1. Attend the clinic for a consultation and assessment of the mole/lesion using a dermoscope.
2. We then submit your pictures to be reviewed by Map My Mole’s leading consultant dermatologists.
3. Within 24-48 hours a report will be sent, which will determine if we can remove the lesion in clinic or if further investigation needs to be carried out with your GP.
Most moles are harmless and don’t change over time, but some can develop into skin cancer. If we have been overexposed to the sun, particularly as a child, then the number of moles we have may increase. The more moles we have, the higher the risk of skin cancer and irregular moles are also an indicator of increased risk.
We should all check our skin regularly, but it’s often easier said than done. Although most moles are utterly harmless, new moles that look unusual, that have changes in colour texture or shape, bleeds or itches or develops a crust or flaky appearance could be signs of something that needs further investigation.
Sooner is better
Obviously, the sooner something is found, the easier it is to treat.
Mole Mapping is an easy, painless, safe and non-invasive skin screening process that highlights any changes to moles that may be cancerous or precancerous. The images are examined by a dermatologist and melanoma can be detected at an early stage – and when skin cancer is diagnosed and removed early, it is more likely to be curable.
We will take images of your mole or skin lesion using a specialist, medical grade camera called a “dermoscope”. It uses light and magnification to help a dermatologist see how your skin looks in more detail than you would be able to see with a naked eye or normal camera. The detailed images will make it easier to spot abnormalities that may require further investigation or diagnostic tests.
Once we’ve taken images of your mole, we will send them to Map My Mole for review. Map My Mole is a third party service provider we use to obtain an indicative opinion from a consultant dermatologist regarding your mole or skin lesion. The consultant will review the images and prepare a report for us so we can advise you on next steps.
We need to send some of your personal information, including your name, contact details and some medical information (including the images we take of your mole) to Map My Mole when we submit the images for review. Images are usually reviewed within 48 hours after we submit them for review, but it may take longer than that. We can request that a copy of the report it will be sent to you as soon as it’s ready, otherwise it will be sent to NR Aesthetics & Skin LTD, and we will contact you to discuss the report with you once we have received it.
No. It’s important that you understand that it is not possible to diagnose any cancer from images, and a formal diagnosis requires a biopsy (sample removed under anaesthetic) and histological assessment. However, the consultant’s report can help us identify a suspicious mole that might need further investigation such as a biopsy.
If you’re concerned about your mole or skin lesion, you should speak to your GP or another medical professional as soon as possible so that they can carry out further tests if needed.
£100 for a 30 minute assessment
for each additional lesion a £35 additional fee will be charged.
