They help to make the cheek and upper lip distinctive by separating the two. As a person ages the fold becomes more pronounced. This happens because the aging process reduces the production of collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin causing volume loss and sagging of the skin. Sun can also be a contributory factor.

Our philosophy is not to simply “add volume”. Dermal filler should be used thoughtfully to restore proportion, provide structural support and enhance your natural features, while maintaining normal facial movement and avoiding an artificial or overfilled appearance.

Two of the principal dermal filler ranges used within clinic are Revanesse® and TEOXANE Teosyal®.

Revanesse®

Revanesse® is a premium range of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers manufactured in Canada by Prollenium Medical Technologies, a company specialising in medical aesthetic devices since 2002.

Revanesse fillers are manufactured in small batches under rigorous quality-control processes and have been designed to provide smooth, natural-looking correction with minimal unnecessary swelling and downtime. Clinical studies of the Revanesse range have demonstrated favourable tolerability and safety data.

The range allows us to select different filler characteristics according to the area being treated and the result required — whether we are looking for subtle contouring, restoring facial support, treating lines or creating soft and natural lip enhancement.

Revanesse has also received recognition within the UK aesthetics industry. Revanesse Contour™ was Commended for Injectable Product of the Year at the 2023 Aesthetics Awards, while Revanesse Outline™ was a finalist in the Best Injectable Product category in 2024.

TEOXANE Teosyal® RHA

No. As hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring protein within our body, the risk of allergy is extremely low, and testing is not needed.

The longevity of dermal filler varies depending on the product used, the area treated and individual patient factors.

As a general guide, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can last anywhere from approximately 6 to 18 months, although some products and treatment areas may last longer.

Factors that can influence how long your results last include:

• the type and formulation of filler used
• the area of the face treated
• the amount of facial movement in that area
• your metabolism
• lifestyle factors such as exercise, smoking and alcohol consumption
• sun exposure and environmental factors
• skin quality and age
• previous treatments and the amount of product used

Areas with a lot of movement, such as the lips, may require more frequent maintenance, whereas fillers used for structural support in areas such as the cheeks or chin can often last considerably longer.

Dermal fillers are not permanent and will gradually be broken down naturally by the body over time.

The procedure time for fillers are very variable as it depends on the area being treated. Approximately between 30-60mins.

Dermal fillers are injected in small amounts using ultra-fine needles or a cannula, depending on the area being treated and the technique required.

Most patients find treatment very manageable. However, some areas — particularly the lips — can be more sensitive. Where appropriate, a prescription-strength topical anaesthetic cream may be applied beforehand to help minimise discomfort.

Nicky uses a variety of advanced injection techniques to make treatment as comfortable as possible while maintaining precision and safety. Depending on your anatomy, the treatment area and the desired result, she may use either a needle, cannula, or a combination of both.

Many dermal filler products also contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, which can further improve comfort during treatment.

You may feel some pressure, pinching, tenderness or a brief stinging sensation during the procedure, but this is usually short-lived.

In most cases, yes — you will see an immediate improvement following dermal filler treatment.

However, the result you see straight after treatment is not always the final result. Mild swelling, tenderness or bruising can temporarily affect the appearance of the treated area.

Over the following 2–4 weeks, the filler gradually settles and integrates with the surrounding tissues, allowing the final result to become softer, more refined and natural-looking.

For this reason, we recommend allowing the treatment time to fully settle before assessing the final outcome.

The amount of dermal filler required varies from person to person and depends on your individual anatomy, age-related changes, treatment area and desired outcome.

For example, a younger patient who simply wants to enhance or define the cheekbones may require considerably less product than someone wishing to restore more significant facial volume loss or structural support.

During your consultation, Nicky will assess your facial anatomy as a whole, discuss your concerns and expectations, and recommend an individual treatment plan based on what is appropriate for you.

At NR Aesthetics & Skin, the aim is always to achieve results that look balanced, refined and natural. Treatment is never about using as much filler as possible.

Nicky firmly believes in a “less is more” approach and, where appropriate, will recommend building results gradually over more than one appointment rather than over-treating in a single session.

A slower, considered approach allows the tissues to settle, gives greater control over the final result and helps preserve your natural facial proportions.

Natural results are always the priority.

To help minimise the risk of bruising and swelling, we recommend that you avoid alcohol and, where medically appropriate, avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen for 24 hours before your appointment.

Please do not stop any prescribed medication, including aspirin, anticoagulants or antiplatelet medication, unless this has been specifically advised by the clinician who prescribed it.

We also recommend:

• arriving with clean skin and, where possible, without makeup over the treatment area
• avoiding treatment if you are feeling unwell or have an active infection
• informing Nicky if you have recently had dental treatment, vaccinations, other injectable treatments or facial procedures
• advising us if you have a history of cold sores, particularly if treatment is planned around the lips or mouth
• informing us of any changes to your medical history, medication, allergies or pregnancy/breastfeeding status before treatment

A full consultation and assessment will be completed before treatment to ensure dermal filler remains appropriate and safe for you.

Following dermal filler treatment, it is normal to experience some temporary swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising in the treated area.

The amount of swelling or bruising varies depending on the area treated, the product used and individual factors. Some areas, particularly the lips, may swell more than others.

These effects are usually mild and generally begin to settle within 1–3 days, although occasional bruising or residual swelling can take a little longer to completely resolve.

The area may also feel slightly firm, tender or uneven initially while the filler settles and integrates into the surrounding tissues.

Your final result should therefore not be assessed immediately after treatment. We recommend allowing approximately 2–4 weeks for the area to fully settle and for the final outcome to become apparent.

Yes. Following dermal filler treatment, we recommend taking a few simple precautions to help minimise swelling, bruising and irritation while the area settles.

You should:

• avoid vigorously massaging, rubbing or applying pressure to the treated area unless specifically advised by Nicky
• avoid strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours
• avoid excessive heat such as saunas, steam rooms and very hot baths for around 24–48 hours
• avoid retinol, retinoids, exfoliating acids and other potentially irritating active skincare products for approximately 48 hours
• avoid alcohol for the first 24 hours where possible, as this may increase bruising or swelling
• avoid other facial treatments such as facials, massage, peels, microneedling, laser or energy-based treatments for approximately 2 weeks, unless otherwise advised

You will be provided with comprehensive aftercare advice following your treatment, including information on what to expect and when to contact the clinic if you have any concerns.

The in-depth consultation and facial analysis enable a customised approach to your treatment. If in the unlikely event that you do not like the treatment the filler can be safely dissolved.

Dermal fillers are very safe when licensed premium products are injected by experienced medical professionals, who have undertaken a full assessment of your medical history alongside a full facial assessment. Knowledge of the areas and the product best suited to this area to be injected is essential, and Nicky is very experienced in this. The main risks associated with dermal fillers are associated with the injections themselves – that is, redness and bleeding (both of which resolve during the treatment) and  bruising.

If you have previously had cold sores, the use of dermal filler around the mouth area can occasionally reactivate the virus – this can be overcome please alert Nicky to this during your consultation & assessment.

There is a small risk of infection, but all products are one-time-use and prepared and administered in an aseptic environment.

There is a risk of a vascular occlusion (when the blood is not able to pass through a blood vessel and gets blocked) however Nicky is trained to recognise and treat this extremely rare complication.

Dermal filler treatment may not be suitable if:

• you are pregnant or breastfeeding
• you are under 18 years of age
• you have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid, lidocaine or any component of the product being used
• you have an active infection, inflammation or skin condition in or near the proposed treatment area
• you have a significant bleeding disorder or another medical condition that may increase treatment risk
• you have previously experienced a serious reaction to dermal filler treatment

Certain medical conditions and medications, including anticoagulants, antiplatelet medication and some immune-related conditions, do not always prevent treatment but may require additional assessment before proceeding.
